How do I recolor an image in Illustrator?

Recoloring an image in Illustrator is a great way to add some color and life into your work. It’s the perfect technique for when you have a black and white or greyscale photo that you would like to give more color.
The first thing you want to do is open up your image in Adobe Illustrator by going to File > Place, then selecting the file from your computer.

Then click on the “Pathfinder” icon located at Window > Pathfinder, which will bring up four different options: Unite, Minus Front, Intersect Shape Areas and Exclude Overlapping Shapes (the one we want). Select “Intersect Shape Areas,” which will make all of the shapes intersect with each other for easier recoloring.
